Understanding the Serpentine Belt or the Drive Belt

The serpentine belt or drive belt is a long, winding, snaking belt tasked with keeping your air conditioning, alternator, power steering pump, and other components running effectively. This belt connects the power steering, AC, and alternator to your engine’s crankshaft. The crankshaft directs power to every one of these systems in addition to your vehicle’s air injection pump. In the event your serpentine belt fails to properly function, your battery will no longer properly charge and your vehicle’s electrical components may fail to operate.

Signs You Need Serpentine Belt Replacement

Just like any other component on your vehicle, your serpentine belt suffers wear and tear. It can be subject to cracking due to the heat from the engine. Most serpentine belts will last anywhere from four to six years. You should always refer to your owner’s manual for specific information on your vehicle.
