What Are the Different Types of Headlights?

There are three main types of headlights that you might find on modern vehicles.

• Halogen Headlights: Halogen headlights are standard in many vehicles across the automotive industry; they are relatively inexpensive to produce and easy to change. However, they also provide lower visibility than some other options.
• HID Headlights: To provide more light, many vehicles use xenon or high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights. The visibility is better than with halogen lights, but they do take a bit of time to warm up and reach their full potential.
• LED Headlights: LED headlights are the best option when it comes to automotive lighting. LED lights cost more than halogen headlights and many HID headlights, but they also shine brighter, take no time to warm up, and last much longer. In addition, they are energy efficient.

Can I Install My Own Headlight or Taillight?

If your Toyota is equipped with halogen headlights, you might be able to change it on your own. However, you will need to keep in mind that halogen bulbs are incredibly sensitive, and should not be touched with bare hands — or even with gloves that have finger oil on them. If oils from your fingers get on a halogen bulb, the bulb will heat up unevenly. This, in turn, will cause it to burn out. Because of this, many drivers find it much more convenient to have the experts take care of it.

However, if your Toyota has LED or xenon exterior lights, it’s best to bring it in for headlight or taillight replacement instead. These lights are much harder to replace. In addition, LED exterior lights are unlikely to burn out, so there may be electrical problems that need to be investigated.
