How to Reset Tire Pressure Light

Tire Pressure Warning Light_216248072

Have you been driving around Santa Cruz and noticed that your TPMS light’s on? Then you’ll want to add air to your tires immediately. Your TPMS, or Tire Pressure Monitoring System, is essential to the safety of your brand new or pre-owned Toyota vehicle.

However, there are times when your TPMS light is on, but your tires are in good condition. In these special circumstances, you’ll want to know how to reset a tire pressure light. Find out how to reset the tire pressure lights on your car, truck, or SUV with the service experts at Santa Cruz Toyota below!

Turning Your TPMS Light from On to Off

You should only try to reset your tire pressure light if you’re absolutely certain that each tire is properly inflated. So, are you totally sure that your TPMS light is on in error? Then you can try a couple of these solutions to reset your tire pressure indicator:

  • Travel around Watsonville at or above 50 mph for 10 minutes. If this technique works, your TPMS light will reset the next time you start your vehicle.
  • When your car is off, set the key to the “On” position without starting the engine. Hold down the TPMS reset button, usually found under the steering wheel, until the light blinks three times. Release the button. Next, you’ll need to start your vehicle and give it about 20 minutes to run. At this point, the system should reset.
  • Inflate each tire 3 PSI over the recommended amount. After that, deflate them all completely. Once you have flat tires, reinflate them to the proper volume. Be sure to do this with the spare tire as well since it may have its own sensor that can trigger the TPMS light.
  • Turn the vehicle off and disconnect the positive battery cable with a wrench. Turn the car on and honk the horn for about three seconds to discharge the remaining power. Finally, reconnect the battery.

When Your Tire Pressure Light is Flashing

So, what does a flashing tire pressure light indicate? If this light is blinking, it means the system itself is in need of attention. Your tire pressure monitoring system depends on batteries to power the sensors. So, a flashing light may mean that you require new batteries, or that the sensors are malfunctioning. Regardless of the cause, you’ll want to schedule service at Santa Cruz Toyota to get your flashing tire pressure light checked.
